Canada’s intelligence service posts DEI-based summer job and permanent work opportunities – gender, race and disability are the primary job qualifications now

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) recently posted summer job opportunities for students and permanent staff based on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

According to the now-deleted job posting, CSIS seeks to increase employment equity across all organizational levels in Canada. The agency specifically aims to boost the representation of individuals from women, people with disabilities, visible minorities and Canada’s First Nations.

“This will be achieved by increasing employment equity group representation (including persons with disabilities, visible minorities, indigenous peoples and women) at all levels within the organization through hiring and talent management practices,” the job posting read.

CSIS encouraged applicants to self-identify if they belong to any of these employment equity groups to cultivate an inclusive workplace that effectively serves Canadians.

“In support of achieving a greater, diverse and skilled workforce, we strongly encourage those individuals who belong to one or more of the employment equity groups to self-identify when applying,” the job posting read. (Related: Report finds cash-strapped NASA still spending MILLIONS on grants to DEI and “environmental justice” initiatives.)

Lindsay Sloane, a CSIS media relations spokesperson, echoed this commitment in an emailed statement to the Western Standard.

“CSIS is committed to building a workforce that is truly representative of the Canadians we serve, by cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace environment,” Sloane said. She also claimed that the agency’s DEI goals apply not only to co-op students but also to full-time roles across all levels of the organization.

The job posting also highlights the screening requirements for co-op candidates, which include an Enhanced Top Secret security clearance involving a security interview, polygraph test and background investigation. The federal agency also urges candidates to refrain from illegal drug use from the time they apply, with a reminder that such use remains a criminal offense in Canada.

Newly appointed CSIS chief views parental rights advocates as “extremists”

This DEI-based hiring practice in CSIS came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Vanessa Lloyd as interim CSIS director in July.

Lloyd, the first woman to lead CSIS, authored a 2023 report titled “Mission Focused: Confronting the Threat Environment,” in which she classified opposition to gender ideology as a national security concern. In the report, she described those critical of gender ideology, including parents of children worried about gender ideology, as “extremists.” She argued that such perspectives could escalate to violent threats.

“CSIS assesses that exposure to entities espousing anti-gender extremist rhetoric could inspire and encourage serious violence against the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or against those who are viewed as supporters of pro-gender ideology policies and events,” wrote Lloyd in the 2023 report. “CSIS assesses that the violent threat posed by the anti-gender movement is almost certain to continue over the coming year.”

This stance aligns with CSIS’s broader focus on preventing “ideological violence,” protecting Canadians from emerging threats and ensuring national security for marginalized communities. In other words, the appointment of Lloyd as interim spy chief contributes to the DEI-based hiring practice in CSIS.
